What is a Nakshatra?
A Nakshatra is one of 27 equal divisions of the ecliptic, each spanning 13 degrees and 20 minutes. The Moon travels through all 27 in about 27.3 days — one sidereal month. Each Nakshatra has a presiding deity, a ruling planet, and a set of symbolic qualities.
Why the Moon’s Nakshatra matters most
Your Janma Nakshatra (birth star) is the Nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth. Because the Moon represents the mind and emotions, this point is considered deeply revealing of temperament. It also anchors the Vimshottari Dasha timing system, making it practically as well as symbolically central.
How Nakshatras are used
- Compatibility (Ashtakoot) — matching charts for marriage using Nakshatra-based criteria.
- Muhurta — selecting auspicious timing for events based on the day’s Nakshatra.
- Dasha — the birth Nakshatra sets your planetary-period sequence.
- Daily Panchang — the Nakshatra of the day informs favorable activities.
